Since its beginning in Ancient Greece in 776 BC, the Olympics have been a way for athletes around the world to compete in many different sports. Some of the more popular sports represented in the Olympic games are swimming, and track and field, and those held in the winter, such as ice hockey, figure skating and downhill skiing. The modern Olympics are important to all countries because they allow athletes to compete and represent their country to the best of their ability and because people around the world are able to watch their favorite sport, learn about different sports, and cheer on their country’s team. First, the modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece in 1896. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, of France, believed that instead of fighting one another in war they should compete against each other in sport events (Middleton, pg. 4). He thought that it was important to build strong bodies as well as strong minds (http://teacher.scholastic.com.) Also, Coubertin was the president of the International Olympic Committee until 1925 and he wrote the charter, the oath and planned the ceremonies to open and close the games (http://teacher.scholastic.com.) Since 1896, The Olympic Games have been held every four years. However, starting in 1994, winter Olympic Games have been played two years after every summer Olympics (Middleton pg. 7). The first modern winter Olympics were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Some of the winter sports that year were 4-man bobsled, figure skating, hockey, skiing, and speed skating. Sixteen nations competed in the games and there were 258 athletes. (www.socialstudiesforkids.com). There were awards given in these Olympics and the first person to win gold at a modern winter Olympics was an American named Andrew Jewtraw , for the 500 meter speed skating event (www.olympics30.com.) Today the winter Olympics are watched by millions worldwide and sports such as ice hockey, figure skating and skiing are just as popular today as they were in Chamonix, France in 1924. Next, the sport of skiing has been part of the winter Olympic Games since they started in 1924 (Tames pg. 14.) Since the Olympics have been put on television, the popularity of skiing and all of the different types there are has increased and millions of people enjoy the sport skiing during their free time. For example, one of the most amazing events people enjoy watching is the freestyle skiing event. Freestyle skiing started in Calgary as a demonstration sport in 1988 and it includes moguls, ballet, and aerials. (www.olympics.org.) The reason many find this sport so interesting to watch is that it combines regular skiing with the ability to do amazing tricks such as jumps, and flips in the air. For example, in moguls, the skier goes downhill and skies over large mounds of snow. In aerials, the skier will ski off a long ramp, into the air and perform twists and flips, hopefully landing on their skies! The United States Olympic ski team members Jeret Peterson won Silver in men’s aerials and Bryon Wilson won Bronze in men’s moguls at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games (www.olympics.org.) The next winter Olympic Games will be held in Sochi, Russia starting February 7, 2014 (www.sochi2014.com/) and the Unites States will be getting their teams ready while other countries of the world prepare to cheer on their home team, too. All the athletes of these games will live by the Olympic motto: “citius, altius, and fortitus, which means swifter, higher, and stronger” (Middleton pg. 6.) In conclusion, the Olympic Games are not only a way for athletes to challenge themselves but also it is a chance for countries to demonstrate that they can come together and compete peacefully. The Athletes from all nations will strive to do their best for their country and spectators at the games will cheer for their home team and celebrate victories.
